The ensemble with nine musicians from all parts of the world who have their home base in the beautiful city of Amsterdam: the Intercontinental Ensemble. Last year they asked themselves: how would a grand symphony by Beethoven, Schubert or Brahms sound like with a strength of nine?
The idea prompted them to start this project. Their own violinist Ernst wrote adaptations of the symphonies - slimming them down from 50 to 9 (!) – with amazing results.
Together with an enthused crowd the Incontinentals rediscovered these works: the gained transparancy allows us to follow each instrument closely. Orchestral music has turned into dynamic chamber music without losing material, but by focussing on the essential parts. An innovation the Intercontinental Ensemble wants to share with the audience during these concerts: being close to the music.
