The programme by Artist in Residence Mathieu van Bellen is based on the wonder child. The violinist comes up with a daring programme that challenges the audience to listen to two namesakes from two different centuries, and to listen with a critical ear. Mathieu describes the concert as follows:
“Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart vs Erich Wolfgang Korngold. So who is the bigger wonder child...? This question may seem easy at first, but we will surprise the audience with an early sonata by Korngold, opus 6. We will place it next to one of Mozart’s major sonatas, in B-flat, KV 378. Korngold was only 15 years old when he published his sonata, but his incredible talent is already quite obviously there. Two years later his first two opera’s would premiere in Vienna. This wonder child was praised by Mahler, Strauss and Puccini, and this sonata is a wonderful example of his very personal style.”
Mathieu van Bellen won the 2015 GrachtenfestivalPrijs, which made him the Artist in Residence this year. As such, the violinist from Futch Flanders has the honour to fill in part of the Grachtenfestival 2016 programme. Without guidelines or restrictions, the Artist in Residence is free to show whatever he chooses, and whatever he wants the audience to see, hear, and experience.
