It’s 80 years ago that Porgy and Bess premiered in America, but the story, which unfolds in the 1930s, is as moving as ever. This mini version by Studio 32’s young singer, accompanied by the jazz pianist Bert van den Brink, tells the affecting tale well. During a row over a craps game, the louche drunkard Crown murders his opponent. He flees, leaving behind his wife, Bess. The invalid beggar Porgy takes her in, and they fall in love. Then Crown returns home, hoping to get Bess back. The two men clash, and Porgy kills Crown. After his arrest, Bess fears she’ll never see him again and allows the drug dealer Sporting Life to lure her to New York. When Porgy returns to find Bess has left him, he decides to go look for her, in spite of his disability.
