For years now, the Amstel Hotel has been a loyal (and royal) venue hosting the concerts of Grachtenfestival Amsterdam. This year, it is part of a special location series within the festival, namely the Stelling van Amsterdam: a 135-kilometre defence line, which served to protect the capital from foreign attacks. From 1914 to 1920 the Amstel Hotel was in fact part of the Stelling, and its commander’s headquarters.
In the beautiful Spiegelzaal of the hotel you are invited to listen to an American program, put together and performed by -among others- pianist Jeroen Sarphati. What makes this extra special, is the fact that pianist Jeroen is a descendent of the famous Amsterdam physician Samual Sarphati (1813-1866). It was at the instigation of Sarphati, who did so much for the wellbeing of the inhabitants of his city, that the hotel was built. It opened its doors in 1867.
To realise an American Dream of his own, Jeroen Sarphati invited two young stars: Esther Kuiper, mezzo soprano, and Rosanne Philippens, violin. Stars & Stripes features works by Ives, Barber, Gershwin and Bernstein. Classical music that leaves plenty of room for the American roots of soul, blues and jazz.
