Gretchen Alterowitz is a choreographer, scholar, performer, and educator. As Assistant Professor of Dance at UNC Charlotte, she teaches ballet technique, dance history, and choreography. Her piece Holding Ground was selected to be performed by the Atlanta Ballet in the company's emerging choreographer series, Wabi Sabi, in September 2012. Additionally, her choreography has been presented by the 11th Annual Women on the Way Festival (San Francisco); the Emerging Choreographers Showcase (Monterey); the North Carolina Dance Alliance Choreographers Showcase (Durham); and the North Carolina Dance Festival (Charlotte).

Gretchen is a founding member of AGA Collaborative, a trio of dance artists-scholars who collaborate to create experimental research and performance (the other members are Alison Bory, Assistant Professor at Davidson College and Amanda Hamp, Assistant Professor at Luther College). AGA Collaborative recently performed the work, Like a turtle without a shell, or crow's feet at UNC Charlotte and Luther College.

Gretchen regularly presents her scholarship at national and international dance conferences, and her book reviews have been published by CORD's Dance Research Journal.
