Violin player Floor Le Coultre and guitarist Martin van Hees pose the question what the landscape of classical music would have looked like without the influence of folk music. Looking back, one can see how big the influence of folk music has been on classical compositions. Fortunately so, for their repertoire is all the more colourful and exciting for it.
In this programme, two cultures with a strong tradition in folk are combined: the Mediterranean meets the Balkans, classical meets folk music. Spanish speaking Manuel De Falla and Astor Piazzolla are connected to Béla Bartók and Atanas Ourkouzounov, who are from the Balkans and who were inspired by the region. All of them are united by folk music.
Although Astor Piazzolla was not born in the Mediterranean region, his music is definitely influenced by it. In Argentina’s prospering days, many people moved to Buenos Aires from the Southern European countries, hoping for a better life. Unfortunately, they did not always find what they were looking for, and many ended up in bars, nightclubs and brothels, where the Tango, the Argentinian ‘blues’, was born.
