Each member of Kluster5 is classically trained, and they were all very motivated for a classical study at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague. Often they were confronted with difficult choices. Choises regarding taste, timing, dynamics, or choices regarding the execution of a composition or a stage performance. One of the most important choices is always the one for ‘style’: jazz, classic, improvisation. Now Kluster5 is questioning the importance of these choices.
During a project of the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest in 2013 under direction of composer and jazz pianist Martin Fondse, Daan, Tim, Isa, Jennifer and Martin worked closely together with jazz musicians, resulting in a colourful mix of classic and jazz. The 5 musicians stood on a musical intersection of jazz and classical music, and decided to continue as Kluster5. Their mission: merging and bridging different music styles.
This year’s theme, ‘Overbruggen’ (bridging) allows to look past boundaries of classical music and jazz. Bridges to world music, improvisation and more are built with the series Grachtenfestival Blends on Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 August at 9.30pm.
