When challenged by soprano Sabine Wüthrich to create their own version of Pergolesi’s beloved masterpiece, Stabat Mater, the Berlage Saxophone Quarter was eager to accept. Alt saxophonist Peter Vigh came on board for the adaptation of this work centring on the love – or more properly, the sorrow – of the mother for her crucified son. As an additional source, Vigh uses Bach's recreation of Pergolesi's original in Psalm 51. Originally written for string quartet and harpsichord, the work is here beautifully brought to life by four saxophones.
