On 21 January 1832, Felix Mendelssohn wrote his sister Fanny from Paris that he “should like to compose a couple of good trios.” In 1839, he put the final touches to the first of a total of two piano trios.
His good friend Robert Schumann was impressed and declared Mendelssohn’s work the ultimate model for the form. Half a century later, the Russian composer Anton Arenski completed his Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, one of his best-known works, taking Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 as his basic model. Schumann was right.
The Amatis Piano Trio won the Publieksprijs at the Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours in 2014.
