Dominicuskerk

Spuistraat 12 1012 TS

The Dominicuskerk is a neo-Gothic church building located at the Spuistraat in Amsterdam. She is built as Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Dominic by Pierre Cuypers and served by the Dominicus. The church is now no longer part of the Catholic Church, but is used by the Dominicus congregation and can be rented out.

The St. Dominicusstatie was founded in 1621 by Father Henricus van der Merwe. Sermons were held in a hidden church called Het Stadhuys van Hoorn. After the restoration of the Episcopal hierarchy in 1853 plans were made to design and execute a new church. Building pastor H. Tielens O.P. commissioned architect Pierre Cuypers to design a church in 1878. The church needed a lot of light as it eventually became a three-part cross basilica. Originally, a high tower of 93 meters was planned for the church, but this was eventually never executed.
