Hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand

Oudezijds Voorburgwal 197 1012 EX Amsterdam

The history of Amsterdam reflects onto the history of Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam in a unique way. In the 15th century the current location of The Grand was used as a monastery and in the 16th century as “Lodging for Princes and Noblemen”. During the Golden Age it served largely as headquarters for the Admiralty. It was then to serve as the City Hall for over one hundred and eighty years. After a complete restoration and renovation, the historical landmark of Amsterdam became a five star hotel in 1992, again welcoming numerous national and international dignitaries and celebrities.

In the past the focus was on administrative and political leaders as William of Orange, Maria de Medici and mayors as Van Thijn and Polak. Today the range of celebrities is much wider, including pop stars such as Robbie Williams, Beyoncé Knowles, Grace Jones and Michael Jackson. One memorable event witnessed throughout The Netherlands at that time was the civil marriage of Princess Beatrix to Claus von Amsberg in 1966, in the stately Council Chamber in The Grand.

Recently, The Grand has undergone another extensive restyling to meet the demands of the modern traveler in five star deluxe surroundings. This magnificent palace, situated on one of the most beautiful canals in the historical heart of Amsterdam is also – as the second hotel in the world and first in Europe – awarded with Sofitel Legend a mark for a very exclusive group of ancient establishments.
