Krijtmolen d'Admiraal

For a long time it was thought that the mill was built in 1792 by Roelof de Leeuw and would be named after his wife Elizabeth Admiraal. However, upon further investigation, this former alderman and mayor of Monnickendam appears to have died in 1763. Elizabeth Admiraal, born in 1702, was the investor in this building project. In her nineties, when she bought the Jan Betten ven in the Buiksloterpolder on June 12, 1792 for 350 guilders, "large one dijmpt two hundred and twelve rods. That same year the mill was completed and put into use.

As a tribute to her husband, Elizabeth had two lions placed on the southeast roof of the mill barn. On the oldest photo of the mill, the lions can still be seen. But unfortunately, they disappeared soon after. During the national mill weekend in May 2009, after 120 years, there were two lions on the mill again along with a copy of an advertising sign that once flanked the lions.
