Frederiksplein 1017XM Amsterdam
Frederiksplein is the square of a dream that came true and then disappeared forever in flames. On August 16, 1864, the Paleis voor Volksvlijt was opened here. The construction of this glass palace was a plan by Samuel Sarphati (1813-1866), the physician and benefactor who 'shook Amsterdam from its slumber'. But in the night of April 17-18, 1929, this beautiful glass building burned down.
Frederiksplein lies between the Amstel and Lijnbaansgracht canals, directly adjacent to the De Nederlandse Bank building.
Frederiksplein is wheelchair accessible.
