Amsterdams Marionetten Theater

Nearby Nieuwmarkt you will find this special building: an old ship forge that has been transformed into an intimate and cozy theater.

Here you can usually see puppet shows that focus on classical music and opera. The origins of this unique theater go back to the 18th century. The composer Joseph Haydn even wrote special puppet operas for the famous court theater of Esterházy. A very specific form of musical theater, which is still developing worldwide. The building also hosts workshops, where the large marionettes are carved from basswood.

In addition to the puppet performances, there are other activities, usually with a focus on music. Now the puppet theater is happy to open its doors to the Grachtenfestival!

rolstoel The Amsterdam Marionette Theatre is wheelchair accessible. There is no wheelchair restroom, but there is a brace in the restroom.
