The Kāna Trio are the proud winners of the Canal Festival Conservatory of Music Competition 2022!
"The jury was impressed by the enchanting, almost symbiotic interplay of the Kāna Trio. The miscellaneous color palette ranged from whisper-soft marimba noise to the most ominous jungle violence," according to jury chairman Frank van den Brink.
Besides Frank van den Brink (clarinetist with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra) the jury consisted of Laura Oomens (violinist with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra), Gwylim Janssens (pianist and artistic director of the Amsterdam Piano duo Festival), Frederike Berntsen (music journalist), Jesse Faber (clarinetist with NAKK), and secretary Lonneke van Straalen (Canal Festival programmer).
The Percussion Trio consists of 3 students from Codarts Rotterdam: Rens Rutten, João Sequeira and Hugo Pereira.
Inspired by the multicultural environment Rotterdam has to offer, after years of studying together plus the common interests they share, the band was created to explore new perspectives within percussion.
This unusual setting is not known on a large scale, the amount of repertoire written for trio percussion is relatively small and intended for very specific contexts, unlike quartet or duo. This encourages the trio to be creative and search for new ways to bridge the gap between the general public and contemporary (non-)classical music.
They will perform at the anniversary edition of the Canal Festival this summer and go on tour to various theaters throughout the Netherlands in 2022-2023.
Daniel Bolba (percussion) from the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam, received an honorable mention from the jury for his impressive play and exceptional performance.
